Proportionally, the body is shorter, wider and thicker than the short-finned squid, with more centred fins and a larger sized head. Inner shell is thin and elongated.

Flying squid is caught in large quantities by the Galician fishing fleet, in diverse grounds, and is sold both fresh and frozen.
