SEASON OF CATCH

Recognisable by its three well separated dorsal fins, especially the two end fins, it has two anal fins, the first very elongated.

Grey with dark grey or light blue. Posterior edge of operculum and base of pectoral fins often with black marks. Blue or violet coloured blue bucal cavity, lighter coloured in juveniles. Black peritoneum. Fairly elongated body. Prominent jaw with no chin.

Large eyes, almost of the same length as the snout. Lateral line is almost straight.

Gregarious, erratic fish, generally from 300 to 400 m depth on clayey bottoms at 1000 to 2000 m (sometimes more inshore). Ascends by night to feed.

Caught by Pair-Purse-seining.

Euroepan coasts of the Atlantic, from the Barents Sea to Gibraltar. Coasts of Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland. Mediterranean.
